Chicagoans are getting a rare, early chance to weigh in on how a developer’s proposed apartment tower should look.
A few weeks after Chicago development firm Fern Hill announced plans for a 36-story apartment tower at North Avenue and Wells Street in Old Town, the tower’s designers, G|R|E|C Architects, put out renderings of six different possible looks for the base, where the high-rise will mingle with vintage low-rise buildings.

The offering isn’t a fully baked menu from which one design will be ordered, but “directions,” Copper said. The opinions that come in from the community will help “direct this iterative process” of designing the building called Old Town Canvas, he said.
